Huurtoeslag is a government rent subsidy for people with lower income. It is paid monthly and can cover a significant portion of rent.
Dutch residents aged 18+ who rent an independent home, are registered at the rental address, and meet the income and wealth conditions. From 2026 exceeding the old maximum rent limit no longer automatically removes entitlement; the calculation still uses a maximum rent of €932.93, and €498.20 for young people under 21.
Depends on income, rent amount, household composition, age and wealth. In 2026 the wealth limit is €38,479 for a single person and €76,958 for partners or co-residents together.
